A Message from your Unifor National President- January 10th 2025

Unifor members,

As Donald Trump’s inauguration fast approaches, the incoming U.S. President continues to make serious threats that would hurt Canadian workers, jobs, our economy and the country itself while making an ever expanding list of unreasonable demands.

Trump’s threat to impose massive tariffs on Canadian exports to the U.S. would do untold damage to both our economies. That threat has now shockingly escalated to overtures that threaten the country itself, suggesting that the U.S. could absorb Canada through sheer economic force.

Many have written off Trump’s words as ‘jokes’ or ‘negotiating tactics’ but as trade unionists, we know how negotiations work. A threat only works if the threat is real. That’s why Unifor leadership immediately warned of the danger and committed to meet the challenges posed by a second Trump administration head on.

Watch this important video message.

We will not be intimidated by Trump and we will condemn any Canadian politician who attempts to appease Trump at the expense of our members and all Canadian workers.

Unifor is actively engaged in building a united front in Canada to take on the existential threat posed by the incoming Trump administration, including with other unions, all levels of government, and Canadian industry. We must also continue to advocate for the protections workers need as we face greater economic uncertainty, including fixing EI, assistance for industry where needed, and ensuring robust employment support measures for workers in the face of the growing trade dispute.

Together, our members and our union will stand against Trump and fight tooth and nail to protect and defend Canadian jobs.

For more information on Unifor’s work visit our trade issues webpage here.

In solidarity,

Lana Payne
National President
