Brothers, Sisters and Members,
While you should have already heard, through the Unifor Halton Action Centre Newsletters or at our General Membership Meetings, I am writing to formally inform you that the Unifor Halton Action Centre will officially close after Friday March 27, 2026.
Our Action Centre first opened its doors on May 27, 2024, as a joint partnership between Unifor and the Ontario Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development. As this agreement was established on a defined term, the contract is now coming to an end. From the very beginning, it was created with a clear purpose: to support our members through the challenges of the indefinite layoff during the re-tooling period.
Over the past two years, the Centre has been an important and essential resource for our membership.
Through the completion of Needs Assessment forms, members were able to identify their individual goals and challenges, allowing Coordinators and Peer Helpers to provide meaningful, personalized support. This included job search assistance, networking opportunities, access to training, one-on-one career counselling, and help with resume writing and interview preparation.
The facility itself was equipped with computers and dedicated Peer Helpers who assisted members with essential services such as My Service Canada registration, Job Bank access, and many other tools critical to navigating this period.
In addition, the Centre hosted a wide range of workshops and programs, including resume building and other training opportunities shaped directly by member feedback. These services played a vital role in helping many of our members remain connected, informed, and prepared for next steps of employment or maintaining income supports.
While it is never easy to close a chapter like this, we can all be proud of what was accomplished together. Our Unifor Halton Action Centre stood as a strong example of what community collaboration and solidarity can achieve during the most difficult of times.
We recognize that this transition may feel uncertain for some, and that many members may still need support within the community. Please know you are not alone—in the coming days we will re-organize the Halton Action Centre website page -into a Community Services page and included links to services and resources to help you continue accessing the assistance you may need. As always, your Local Union leadership is here and will remain available to assist with all contract-related matters.
On behalf of Unifor Local 707, I want to thank our government partners, Unifor National staff, Coordinators, Peer Helpers, Local leadership and every member who contributed to the success of the Centre for the past two years. Your dedication, compassion, and tireless efforts made a meaningful difference in people’s lives, and the positive impact of your work will be felt long after the doors close.
In Solidarity,
Mark Sciberras
President
Unifor Local 707
