Declaring Intimate Partner Violence an Epidemic: Why It Matters
Unifor supports the growing call to formally declare Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) an epidemic. This declaration is a necessary step toward meaningful action, accountability and prevention. IPV impacts people across all communities and workplaces, with devastating consequences for individuals and families. Recognizing IPV as an epidemic acknowledges the scale of the crisis and affirms that gender-based violence is a systemic issue requiring coordinated public action.

Specifically, an epidemic declaration can help secure sustained funding, improve data collection, and strengthen prevention and survivor supports, including workplace protections, housing, healthcare and education. As a union committed to equity, safety and dignity, Unifor stands in solidarity with survivors and advocates. Declaring IPV an epidemic is a critical step toward saving lives and building safer communities and workplaces.
