Oakville District Labour Council – 2023 Activists Awards Dinner

Brothers & Sisters,

The ODLC 2023 Activist Awards Dinner was held on Thursday June 8, 2023 at Unifor Local 707 Hall. The event honours those who have made outstanding contributions to the community and union(s) by promoting their skills and dedication through walks of life.

Local 707 Vice President, Brother Dave Millar was the the recipient of the ODLC George Hicks Lifetime Achievement Award. Dave was first elected as a delegate in 1999 at 25 years old. In 2009, Dave was elected ODLC president, a position he held until 2018. He has fought and worked tirelessly for the labour movement….supporting workers on the picket lines, lobbying governments, chairing meetings, being involved in his community, and bringing people from all walks of life together.

Brother Tim Batke accepted the award on Dave’s behalf as he is in Calgary attending Skilled Trades Council.

Congratulations on your much deserved award and acknowledgement!

Previous administrative assistant for Local 707, Carol Dubois was the recipient of the Barney Banovac United Way Social Activist Award. She was a Board member for The United Way and sat on the ODLC for many years. Congratulations Carol!

Official Opposition Leader of Ontario NDP, Marit Stiles, was keynote speaker for the event. Marit is a long-time community activist and former Toronto School Board Trustee. She is a passionate advocate for labour and public education. In her speech, she emphasized that working people must continue to fight for rights and equality and reminded us our past and current victories.

Congratulations to all award recipients and thank you to all the speakers, participants, staff and those in attendance.
