To: All Unifor Members
Federal Bill C-39 proposes sweeping changes to the Canada Labour Code and seriously infringes on our right to collective bargaining and to strike effectively.
Today, Unifor is presenting our position to Senate and House of Commons committees.
At a time when all levels of government should be working together to protect Canadian jobs and solidify our country’s economy, our government has decided to come after our rights.
Help us show government that all Unifor members are united.
What’s at stake?
Bill C-39 introduces a new mechanism so that the Minister of Labour can unilaterally and immediately end a strike in federally-regulated sectors, end negotiations, and send the contract to an arbitrator to decide.
This kind of power undermines free and fair collective bargaining and progress for workers.
You can’t have a strong economy without strong unions. Unions secure transformational change for workers because of the threat of a strike. It’s how we make gains that set standards across entire industries, lifting up all workers.
Ending legal strikes will not end strikes. Unifor members will always defend our rights at work. By tipping the scales, employers are incentivized to ignore workplace issues with the expectation that government will step in on their behalf. This is a recipe for chaos, not cooperation.
We also need to speak up to make sure the wins for workers stay in this Bill.
- End contract flipping at airports. The bill will end the practice of workers losing their job and union just because a contract changes its logo at the top. This is especially important given the looming threat of airport privatization.
- Support for a union’s first contract. Newly organized workers should have access to support that ensures they can reach a collective agreement and remove the employer incentive to stall the first round of negotiations.
