The opening of Detroit Three bargaining is two weeks away and your Master bargaining committees are ready to get to the table.
Negotiations start on August 10. The union will meet separately with each company to deliver members’ bargaining proposals. The meetings will officially open the bargaining process with Ford, General Motors and Stellantis.
The bargaining team Unifor members have assembled in each plant are ready to work over the next several months on behalf of more than 18,000 autoworkers covered by the agreements in this round of negotiations.
The union welcomed more good news this week of yet another investment at the GM CAMI Assembly plant. This investment will create 300 new jobs in a new EV battery module assembly facility. Members at the CAMI facility continue to be negatively affected by battery and supply chain disruptions experienced since the start of EV production.
Investments like these are needed to strengthen Canada’s electric vehicle transition, secure local supply chains and grow the auto sector footprint across the country. Many investments have been secured since the last round of negotiations, but more work needs to be done. At the Stellantis Brampton Assembly Plant, recently, Unifor brought corporate leaders to the shop floor to meet with autoworkers about the need for future product commitments.
Together, we have worked hard with the members of our plants and the entire team to create the right conditions for Auto Talks 2023 to succeed. Part of that work has been advocating every day for governments to develop comprehensive and competitive industrial strategy, so that Canada has a strong place in the global EV future. That point was made loudly and clearly in a new op-ed published by Unifor in the Windsor Star.
