What is Emancipation Day?

August 1st is officially recognized as Emancipation Day across Canada. Emancipation Day marks the day that the Slavey Abolition Act became law in the British Empire (including Canada) and ended the practice of slavery for millions of Black people and their descendants around the world. Therefore, we must recognize the entire month of August as Emancipation Month. Please join the BIWOC committee/Unifor local 707 to recognize and reflect on Black peoples who were enslaved in Canada and celebrate the strength, resilience, and perseverance of Black communities.
